Difference in scaring between FUT and FUE hair transplant
What Hair Transplant Patients Need to Know
When considering a hair transplant in Arizona, one of the most important concerns patients have is scarring.
Both FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) can restore hair effectively,
but the type of scarring they leave behind is very different. Understanding these differences helps patients
make the right decision for their long-term appearance.
FUT is an older hair transplant method where a strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area.
Hair follicles are then dissected from the strip and implanted into areas of hair loss.
Because a strip of tissue is removed, FUT leaves a linear scar across the back of the scalp.
This scar can often be hidden with longer hair, but it may become visible if the patient chooses
to wear their hair short.
FUE is a modern hair transplant technique where individual hair follicles are extracted one by one
from the donor area. Instead of a long incision, the surgeon removes each follicle using a tiny punch tool.
This method leaves behind small circular scars that are typically difficult to detect once healed.
Because there is no strip removal, patients often prefer FUE when they want the flexibility to wear
short hairstyles.
The biggest difference between the two procedures is the type of scar that remains after surgery.
FUT produces a single linear scar that runs horizontally across the donor area. While experienced
surgeons use advanced closure techniques to minimize visibility, the scar is permanent.
FUE, on the other hand, leaves many tiny dot scars spread across the donor area. These are usually
small enough that they blend into the surrounding hair once healing is complete.
Many patients today prefer FUE because of the minimal scarring and quicker recovery time.
In a climate like Arizona where short hairstyles are common, avoiding a visible linear scar
is an important consideration.
However, every patient is different. Hair density, donor area strength, and long-term hair
loss patterns all play a role in determining the best approach.
If you are considering a hair transplant and want to understand the differences between FUT
and FUE scarring, a consultation can help determine the best solution for your hair loss
and long-term goals.
