Essentially, a beard/mustache transplant is what it sounds like. Healthy hair from the back of a patient’s scalp is removed by either an FUE or FUT procedure (the technique is chosen based on the patient’s needs and desires). This hair is then prepared by the doctor and her staff for placement in the beard and mustache areas.
The doctor spends a great deal of time with the patient to design the exact area that the patient wants their facial hair. The doctor will make very tiny incisions at very specific angels and directions to match the patient’s existing hair. The new hairs will then be placed into these new sites. Soon enough the patient will see permanent hair growth and the facial hair they have been dreaming of.
In the average facial hair transplant, you can get about 4000 hair follicles grafted onto the beard. This varies depending on the amount of existing facial hair and the design that the patient desires. Some patients even choose to come back for a second procedure for even more density in the future.
A lot of the time, though, only about 2,500 follicles are necessary for a full beard.
These newly transplanted hairs are permanent and can be treated just like any other facial hair. A patient is able to shave it to the skin, can grow a 5 O’clock shadow or even grow a long luscious beard if they want to. The sky’s the limit.

How Much Does a Beard Transplant Cost?
Now that you understand the detailed process of what a beard transplant is, it’s probably no surprise that it’s an expensive procedure.
Then again, when you compare this treatment to other aesthetic procedures we partake in as humans in order to enhance our looks and feel better about ourselves, it’s not out of place.
If having a thick and healthy beard is important to you, you should never feel bad about the decision to undergo a beard transplant.
While the total cost isn’t the most important thing, it’ll be well worth the investment to be happy with what you see in the mirror every morning.
Depending on the clinic and the doctor you end up choosing, you should be prepared to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000 for a quality beard transplant.
It’s definitely possible to find cheaper options elsewhere, but for a procedure performed by a reputable clinic that has produced successful results, you won’t want to pay much less than this. Since your face is what everyone sees and a bad beard or mustache transplant can not be hidden, it is extremely important to go to someone that is experienced in performing this procedure. What is FUE or FUT?
This refers to how the donor hair is removed from the back of the scalp:
While each is a bit different, both involve the same process of a surgeon removing the hair from the donor area.
Let’s learn a bit about the two options:
FUE
FUE is the most common method of removing donor hair in a beard transplant. At H4L there are two options: ARTAS robotic or Advanced WAW system. The doctor will go over the options you have during the consultation.
In this process, individual hairs are harvested from the donor area (one by one) and harvested over a much larger area. The donor area in the back of the scalp is more evenly distributed and not focused in a small area, so as to not leave any area thinner than another. It also allows for the patient to trim their hair shorter than an FUT procedure.
What’s left in the donor area are just small, white circular scars around the follicles that are not typically noticeable. (Results may vary depending on the doctor and clinic.)
FUT
In an FUT transplant, a small strip of tissue is taken from the donor area through the process of microscopic dissection.
Left behind is just one small fine linear scar from the closed wound.
Uses mid-portion of harvest zone to increase the number of grafts in the one used area.
